Marine Engine Cylinder Liner

Ship Engine Cylinder Liner Sleeve

A marine engine cylinder liner sleeve, also known simply as a cylinder liner or cylinder sleeve, is a cylindrical component that is inserted into the cylinder block of an internal combustion engine. It provides a durable and wear-resistant surface for the piston to move within the cylinder.

Cylinder Liner Material:

Engine cylinder liners are typically made of cast iron or steel alloy. These materials offer excellent strength, thermal conductivity, and wear resistance to withstand the harsh operating conditions in marine engines.

Cylinder Sleeve Function:

The main purpose of a cylinder liner is to provide a smooth, low-friction surface for the piston rings to slide against. It also acts as a barrier between the piston and the engine coolant or lubricating oil, preventing any leakage.

Marine Cylinder Liner Types

In marine engines, there are primarily two types of cylinder liners: wet liners and dry liners.

Wet cylinder Sleeves

It is designed with water jackets surrounding the liner. These jackets allow for direct contact between the liner and the engine’s cooling water. The cooling water circulates around the liner, absorbing heat generated during the combustion process. This type of liner provides efficient cooling and helps maintain optimal operating temperatures.

Dry Cylinder Liners

It does’t have water jackets surrounding them. Instead, they rely on the engine’s cooling system to indirectly dissipate heat. The cooling water passes through the engine block and absorbs heat from the combustion chamber, indirectly cooling the dry liners.
